Central Heating Repairs and Upgrades in South London

Cold radiators, rooms that never warm up, a thermostat that does nothing, or a system that bangs and gurgles: these are central heating faults rather than boiler faults, and they need someone who looks at the whole system. InstaGasWorks repairs and upgrades central heating across South London as a Gas Safe registered engineer, with the price agreed before any work starts.

This page covers the radiators, valves, pump and controls around the boiler. If the boiler itself has stopped, the boiler repair page is the place to start, and if radiators are cold at the bottom because of sludge, a powerflush is usually the fix.

Central Heating prices

Radiator not heating / cold radiators

From £120

  • TRVs checked
  • Radiators bled
  • System balanced
  • Pump inspected

Controls & thermostats

From £120

Install and upgrade heating controls and thermostats. The control itself is included.

Radiator fitting (labour only)

From £150 per radiator

Fitting a radiator you supply in place of an existing one. A radiator in a new position is quoted after a look.

  • Old radiator drained and removed
  • Your radiator hung and connected
  • System refilled and bled
  • Tested and balanced

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)

£45 to £75 per radiator

Old valves swapped for thermostatic ones so each room can be set on its own. The price depends on the valve chosen.

Magnetic filter

£295

Supplied and fitted on the heating return pipe, catching sludge before it reaches the boiler. Already included with every powerflush and new boiler.

Powerflush

£499

For sludged systems and radiators cold at the bottom: up to 6 radiators, chemicals and a magnetic filter included. Larger systems are priced on the powerflush page.

Parts such as valves, pumps and radiators are quoted before they are fitted, and new or extended heating systems get a free survey and a written quote.

Heating problems covered

Radiators cold at the top

Usually trapped air. Bleeding the radiator releases it, and the system pressure is checked afterwards so the boiler is not left too low.

Radiators cold at the bottom

A sign of sludge settling in the radiator. Flushing the radiator or the whole system clears it; a powerflush also includes a magnetic filter to help keep it clear.

Hard water and your boiler

One room never warms up

Often an unbalanced system, where the radiators nearest the boiler take most of the heat. Balancing the radiator valves spreads it evenly.

Thermostat or timer not working

Controls fail, lose their wiring or were never set up properly. They are tested and repaired, or replaced with modern controls.

Weather and load compensation explained

Noisy pipes or a struggling pump

Gurgling, banging or a pump that hums but moves no heat. Air, sludge or a failing pump are the usual causes, found and quoted on the visit.

New radiators and bigger systems

Swapping tired radiators, adding one to a new room or extending the system. Small jobs are priced up front; larger ones get a free survey and a written quote.

How a heating repair works

  1. Step 1

Tell the engineer what is happening

Which radiators are cold, when it started and whether the boiler shows a fault code. It helps the visit start in the right place.

  2. Step 2

The system is checked as a whole

Radiators, valves, pump, pressure and controls are checked together, because a heating fault often shows up a long way from its cause.

  3. Step 3

    A price before any work

You are told what is wrong and what it costs to put right, with any parts quoted, before anything is changed.

  4. Step 4

    Fixed, balanced and tested

The repair is made, the system is bled and balanced, and every radiator is checked for heat before the engineer leaves.

Central Heating questions, answered

Why is my radiator cold at the bottom but warm at the top?

That usually means sludge has settled in the bottom of the radiator and is blocking the flow. Bleeding will not help, because the problem is debris rather than air. Flushing the radiator or the whole system clears it, and a powerflush includes a magnetic filter to help keep the system clean afterwards.

Why is my radiator cold at the top?

Trapped air is the usual cause. With the heating off and the radiator cool, bleeding it with a radiator key lets the air out. Check the boiler pressure gauge afterwards, as bleeding lowers the pressure and the boiler may need topping up. If a radiator needs bleeding every few weeks, there is a reason air keeps getting in, and it is worth having it looked at.

How much does a central heating engineer cost?

Common jobs have published prices: a cold radiator visit from £120, controls from £120 with the control included, a radiator you supply fitted from £150, TRVs from £45 a radiator and a magnetic filter for £295. Fault-finding beyond that is charged by the hour at the published labour rates, and parts are quoted before they are fitted.

Is this the same as a boiler repair?

Not quite. If the boiler has stopped or shows a fault code, start with a boiler repair visit. If the boiler runs but some radiators or rooms stay cold, the fault is usually in the heating system around it, which is what this page covers. One visit can look at both.

Should I powerflush or replace my radiators?

If several radiators are cold at the bottom and the system water is dirty, a powerflush usually restores them for far less than new radiators. Replacing makes sense when a radiator is leaking, corroded through or the wrong size for the room. You will be told honestly which applies.
